Day 94 Knowledge Is Power

Guys, I have done a little of everything today! I started my day with some coffee and internet time, moved on to dishwashing and kitchen cleaning, a little breakfast cooking for me, a three mile walk, a visit with my Momma, a little more dishwashing, some breakfast cooking for Kathy, some Diversity in the Workplace homework, a solo trip to Lowe's for boards to fix the gate on the privacy fence, cooking lunch for me an Kathy both, mendindg the gate on the privacy fence, mending the electric fence, another mile walk (I wanted to have ten for the weekend), and then some Cowboys Football watching (booooooo) and then I got to finish Iron Man 2 without falling asleep. Aaaaaah, a pretty good day, no?

So, I am sure we have all heard the the saying "knowledge is power" before, haven't we? Yeah, it has never been more evident than ever to me that this is true than it is to me now that I have started to make conscious decisions on my food and exercise choices. I am not pleading total ignorance is my reason for my largeness now, I am just saying that compared to what I know now, I knew very little before. I am not just aware of calories now but glycemic indexes, fat contents, carb contents. I know how to prepare food that is good for me now, rather than a stop at the drive through or the gas station. I know that I don't NEED a gallon of soda a day. Heck I don't NEED any soda, but I do have two a week. I know that water consumption is at least very important if not the key to weight loss. I know that if I eat fewer calories, and exercise more, then I create a calorie deficit for that day, and I lose weight. I know that if I eat often enough, small snacks, then my metabolism will not go into starvation mode. I know that if I will just get up and get started on that exercise, I will be rewarded by a better attitude and a great self image. I know that I want to help others to find all these things out, because knowledge is power, but spreading knowledge is a form of grace, which God wants us all to have. I have considered the idea of approaching the editor of my local paper to see if I may be able to begin a weekly column in his paper telling people about my journey, the things I have learned, the things I have done, the things I have experienced. I would love to get some local folks here on the bandwagon and perhaps provide a little spark and enthusiasm for their beginning. What do ya'll think?

  1. Shane, it seems I have heard both positives and negatives from local papers like this. I would say it is worth a try though. You sure don't know if you don't ask.

  2. You never know unless you ask! I think it's a great idea.

  3. Sounds like a fantastic idea! as everyone else has already said, "you wont know unless you ask".

  4. I know the large newspaper here did that a couple of years ago; they followed the journeys of 3 people who blogged regularly at first and then really slowed down... It was an interesting series to me anyhow! Of course, in a small town you'd lose privacy! Maybe write a simple column and a 'game plan' and present it to the features/local happenings editor.

  5. Great day, wow! Yes, great idea Shane--I completely understand your desire to share what you've learned--we can't just keep it to ourselves!!
You would do wonderfully with something like that--I'm thrilled for you and wish you the best!!

  6. I am totally relate to your post! I look at some of the fastfood I once ate and it amazes/scares me. For me, I love carrying this knowledge into my parenting. I have become the queen of making healthy vegan cupcakes and fun veggie platters that kids will eat. My kids enjoy going with me to harvest black walnuts and pick berries or visit the farmer's market.

As always, I am enjoying your blog.

  7. That's a question that I've been mulling over in my own mind: How can I help my neighbors and local community with their own weight loss efforts. What avenues can you or I take to reach out to others, help them, educate them, motivate others to reach their own weight-loss goals? Do we talk to a local church? Newspaper? Is there some way we can get the word of our blogs out there? I want to help, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing it. Do you have any brainstorming ideas? :-)

I still think that at some point you should try giving a motivational speech at your church about your weight loss journey. I think you would find a receptive audience, and you appear to have a strong faith that your congregation can relate to. I think that's a wonderful place for you to begin. (I don't belong to a church, so this is not really an option for me personally!)

Hey if you're looking for more interesting weight-loss related stuff to learn about, google "eccentric and concentric muscle movements." It'll give you some ideas for your workouts, I think.

  8. I think it's a great idea, Shane. And in selecting material for the column, you will only get smarter about all this. Go for it!

  10. I think you should ask. The worst they can do is say no, but they might say yes. Then, yes or no, you should keep asking around to different groups. Not everyone reads the paper, and there are lots of areas where people could benefit from this info and support.

  11. I love the idea of approaching the local paper. I am sure many of your other supporters and followers would, too. The thing is, Shane, we have learned that not only is knowledge power, but that it is easy, yes, easy to make this life style change. I think that message is one that needs to get out there. My blogger friend, look how far you have come. You are narrowing in on 100 days of change. Look at what you have learned about food and what makes up food and hot it is metabolized within your body. Now, go rock the socks of the people in your town with that message! Michele
